Lace monitor or 'Goanna', (Varanus varius) (Varanidae: Monitor lizards)
The Lace monitor is a very large lizard widespread in eastern Australia, especially close to the coast. They can be 1.5 - 2 m long. Only one Australian lizard is bigger - the related Perentie of inland Australia. Lace Monitors can climb trees ( as shown) and can be a major predator of nesting birds ( and they know it), they will also scavenge and hunt on the ground. In National Park campsites on the coast there are usually a few offering a fireplace and BBQ cleaning service. They are not dangerous if you leave them alone.
