Australian Water Rat /Rakali (Hydromys chrysogaster, Muridae: Rats, Mice) Goulburn, NSW, Australia

Unique to Australia and New Guinea plus nearby islands the Water Rat is a large (55-60 cm long head to tail) aquatic rodent found in water bodies in non-arid northern, eastern and far southwestern Australia. Apart from the Platypus and it is Australia's only aquatic mammal. Filmed here swimming and diving in the clear water of Goulburn's water supply in the Southern Highlands of NSW. Its large size and white-tipped tail makes confusion with the much smaller introduced pest rats unlikely.
